I started going to Athlone Opticians two years ago as I was tired of going to opticians with similar frames and I wanted something a little bit different. My glasses were personally selected for me and the personal service was second to none.
Anne, Athlone
I am diabetic and was very concerned about the health of my eyes. Valerie carried out a comprehensive eye exam and explained everything in great detail which really reassured me. I could not recommend Athlone Opticians highly enough.
Michael, Athlone
My two children recently had an eye exam at Athlone Opticians. We had attended another optician over the years and wanted to try somewhere new. We found Valerie and Carmel to be so professional and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We really had a great experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have an eye examination?
We recommend an eye exam every 2 years. Children, patients over 70 and patients with eye conditions may be monitored annually or more frequently if necessary.
If I can see well, do I need a regular eye exam?
Yes. A comprehensive eye exam includes checking the health of the inner and outer parts of the eye. Even if you’re happy with your vision it’s worth having a regular check-up to screen for eye disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy to name but a few. If these eye conditions are detected early there is less chance they will affect your vision.
How much is an eye test/eye exam?
Most people are entitled to a free eye exam and glasses through their medical card or PRSI contributions, this now also covers the self- employed. If you have no cover an eye test is €40 and includes digital retinal photography. Digital retinal photography allows your optometrist to take a detailed picture of the back of your eye which helps to monitor the health of your eyes.
What are progressive / varifocal lenses?
These are multifocal lenses that correct vision at different working distances, from reading distance to far distance.
Unlike bifocals, they have a gradual change in prescription and don’t have visible lines that separate the segments, so they look just the same as single vision lenses. We deal exclusively with Zeiss varifocal lenses which are the world leaders in optics.
I have problems with glare in bright sunlight. What can I do about this?
We stock a large range of sunglasses, many of which are suitable for prescription. We stock designer brands such as Rayban, Prada, Tiffany & Co, Armani, Oakley, Maui Jim as well as many other ranges. We encourage the use of polarised lenses, particularly for driving, as these eliminate much of the glare experienced by drivers.
How long does an eye exam take?
We always advise our clients to allow an hour as the eye exam takes approximately 30 minutes and ample time needs to be given for frame selection when necessary, you will have your glasses for a number years!
When should I get my child’s eyes tested?
The importance of regular eye examinations in childhood cannot be emphasised enough. It is recommended that children have an eye examination by the age of three, or earlier if you think that there may be a problem or if there is a family history of vision problems including squints. Sight checks carried out by GPs or school screenings are not as comprehensive as a full eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. A child’s vision continues to develop until the age of eight, and without early treatment vision defects can become permanent disabilities.
I would like to try contact lenses, is it difficult?
It can be daunting for people who have never tried contact lenses before or tried and failed in the past. We stock contact lenses from the leading suppliers such as Johnson & Johnson, Alcon, Coopervision and Bausch and Lomb. We will prescribe only the most comfortable, breathable contact lenses for your eyes ensuring you sight is fantastic and your eyes are healthy.
Can children wear contact lenses?
Yes, children can wear contact lenses. We recommend daily disposable contact lenses for children usually for sport. We also recommend them to prevent progression of myopia which is called myopia control. Valerie is specially trained in myopia control and prescribes contact lenses to children as young as 8 years of age. Please contact the practice if you would like further information on myopia control contact lenses.
